Rowling: Harry may die!

From J.K. Rowling's interview with Stephen Fry at the Royal Albert Hall in London:
One young fan asked her whether she planned one day to write books about an adult Harry. She replied: "You have to wait and see whether he survives to be a grown- up...

kate:

well i know harry's cool and all but when you think about it she can't write about him foreva it's better if he goes out when it's exciting then to go out when theres no storylines left and prberly by then he would of had a kid and the story goes on about him or her.

Molly:

I personally think that it should be that Harry dies....if you HAVE read the 5th book it says that only one of them survives so if Harry dies Voldemort rules...

Molly:

sorry there was a mistake in my last post..i think Harry SHOULN'T die

Molly, that's a relief :-) Because, for me, if Harry dies after seven years of fighting Voldemort... what was the point?

R. C.:

lol, sorting hat i agree!

Casiquire Ziphonium:

Personally I think that's just getting her fans up onto their toes...I doubt she'll kill Harry off. That kind of proved to me that he WOULDN'T die.

harrysangel:

The point would be his noble sacrifice, unfortunately I think Harry's death might be what would vanquish Voldemort. I think what Rowling may have up her sleeve is that Voldemort would be stripped of his powers by killing Harry. We know Harry took some of Voldemort's power when he was a baby, what if all Voldemort's power will die with Harry? Dumbledore says there are things worse than death, and that he would not be satisfied to take Vol's life....what would be worse than death to Vol? To PERMANENTLY lose the ability to do magic and live life as a muggle! NO one would follow him anymore.

Harry would be using his power that Vol "knows not" ( aka his heart, his love for all his friends) to rid the world of Vol's tyranny and power by making the ultimate sacrifice. I HOPE this is not the case, that there is another way but I can see this being the answer.

soo cool:

Well, Harry is kinda the star of the book. (He's the main character.)Harry should not die cause then it will be a sad ending. It would definatley be an odd (and sad) ending.

I guess the Voldermort fans (very few fans) hope Harry dies.

stuart:

I am completely convinced that Harry dies at the end of the last book. There are a number of clues that are pointing to this very strongly.

Padfoot:

well, i hav a funny feeling he will die. and (dont take this the wrong way) but i think it wood b interesting 2 c how everyone copes with his death. imagine dumbldore or ron or lupin crying. (and sobbing, not silent tears lik dumbldore had at the end of 5.) and maybe we wood get 2 meet harrys parents, and c rowling's view of what its lik 2 die, cuz we, as readers, go where harry goes. i just think it wood b interesting.

Phoenix:

I think that Harry should actually die in the last book (not that I like death...but...). It just seems that it would be the only way to end it...with true closure. I can see it ending with Harry being united with his parents and with Sirius and Voldemort dying as well...

gryffindor:

Harry's gonna die? That's horrible! How can J.K Rowling even think of such a thing? I know that the story has to end, but not this way!
What about the fans? I don't think I can stand a shock like that. Maybe J.K Rowling can write about some adventures if Harry gets into the ministry. I dunno, but please, whatever you do, don't write a really sad ending like this.

harryfan:

Harry die? I doubt it. I agree with some of the others, it would have been a waste of time if he dies. But, what I think is that Neville is actually Vol's equal. Don't know, MAYBY!!! That's why Harry won't die, but I think Neville will.
